I made a heavily insulated chick brooder outside using pine shavings and snow to keep the birds safe in the negative temperatures at night.

The chicks had outgrown their little dog kennel so they had to get a new home. We did not want to deal with two of them in our tiny house so the chicks had to go outside.

But the problem is that we still have freezing nights and sometimes below zero. So the chicks had to be in a well insulated home.

I took the chicken tractor and put two inches of pine shavings on the floor for comfort.

Then I took 16 bags of pine shavings and stacked them up against the sides of the chicken tractor as insulation.

Next I buried it all under many feet of snow as a further insulation barrier and to keep the bags of pine shavings from tipping over.

Inside I used three bags of pine shavings as an insulated doorway between the front and back of the chicken tractor.

A lamp inside the insulated side keeps the birds warm at night.

At night I put a tarp over the front to further reduce any potential wind from reaching the little chickens.

This setup can be run fully off the grid using one or two 20 watt light bulbs as heaters for the chicks. Since we have 800 watts of solar panels connected to our tiny house, this is not a problem.
