Description:
I cut my own 2x4 lumber from a rough log on video to show you the entire process. I used my stationary chainsaw lumber mill to cut this lumber.

First I rolled up a log onto the lumber mill and clamped it in place. This was a log which I figured was large enough to give me two 2x4s, which is perfect for this video.

I made the first cut to give me a flat surface on the log which is 4 inches wide.

Then I turned the log over 90 degrees and used my speed square to make sure the flat surface was square with the lumber mill rails. This will give me a good square cut on the next pass.

I took off this edge too which gave me another 4 inch wide surface. Then I turned the log over two more times, each time taking off the bark and cutting down to a 4 inch width.

I had one side which was five inches though and I cut this board off giving me a 1 x 4 which I can use for projects later on.

Nothing gets wasted on the off grid homestead. All of the cut offs will be used for projects. These ends are perfect for making a play ground area for our daughter next spring. I plan to make her a fenced in area with jungle gym, swing, slide, fort and all.

Thicker, larger cut offs are going to be used to build a deer fence around our garden.

Anything else that we do not use goes into our off grid tiny house to be used for home heating in the wood stove.

Even the tree bark which falls off gets used in our garden as mulch.

Anyway, back to our lumber. Finally I cut the entire 4x4 board which I had left over in half to give me two 2x4s.

It really feels good to be able to cut a rough log into useful lumber. These logs were destined for the fire wood pile before I saved them.
