Description:
I wondered if you could make butter using off the shelf, store bought heavy whipping cream. Most milk products from the grocery store are homogenized so that the fat is bound with the water and will not separate.

I looked around and found some normal heavy whipping cream on sale so I grabbed a half pint for the experiment.

I took out our old fashioned butter churn and poured in the heavy whipping cream.

Then I turned and turned and turned. It took a very long time for anything to happen at all.

Later, after much turning, I could see some bubbles forming in the cream. Whipped cream was starting to take shape. I kept turning and turning....

After a while I had normal whipped cream. I could have accelerated this stage by simply using a hand mixer but I wanted to make butter the old fashioned way. So I kept turning.

Eventually the whipped cream started to get even thicker. It became nearly a solid.

After this stage things went very fast. Soon the solids started to separate from the liquids and it changed a lot. This was surprising to see how it changes although I have done this before. It is so exciting to watch first hand.

Soon you could see yellow butter forming in the jar along with liquid buttermilk. Some more churning fully separated the butter from the buttermilk.

I filtered off the butter milk into a bowl to separate the butter. Only the butter was left in the strainer. I formed the butter with a knife on a plate until I had a normal looking stick of butter. I got about a 3/4 stick of butter and a nice amount of buttermilk from a half pint of heavy whipping cream.

I did not add salt but this could have easily been done. We will use this butter for baking or cooking.

And that is how easy it is to make your own old fashioned butter from off the shelf milk products.
