'It is madness': Dr Eamonn Mathieson calls for Daniel Andrews to stop causing harm before being cut off'It is madness': Doctors plead with Daniel Andrews to rethink virus responseNatalie OliveriA group of doctors have pleaded with Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews to rethink his approach to suppressing the coronavirus."This attempt for viral elimination is irrational and unachievable," Dr Eamonn Mathieson told Today."And simply it is madness and it needs to stop. He needs to take on a second opinion urgently from doctors who know and can convey the story of the harm that is being caused by this approach."A letter was sent to the premier from 50 doctors, who have asked for a different way of dealing with the state's COVID-19 crisis."It was really more a cry from the heart," Dr Mathieson said."We knew that we were taking a risk, and we were putting our careers and our livelihoods on the line, quite literally, in breaking ranks in a sense."We didn't know how it would go. We thought we might have gotten into quite significant trouble on lots of levels."The issue with the Andrews' government's plan, he said, was that it went against healthcare principals."We think this approach, essentially to speak bluntly and with all due respect to the Premier and his experts - that basically their approach is defying the six basic principles of good medical practice."Dr Mathieson said he and the other professionals "felt passionate about it" that they had to take action. The response from the community following the letter has been "overwhelming"."They said finally the doctors have spoken, finally something has happened," he said.
