This is another video in the series on "How To Get Off The Grid For $5,000" or less.

Today we are going to talk about Grid Assisted Solar Power. Many people are familiar with grid tied solar power but not too many have heard about grid assisted solar power before.

In a grid tied solar power system your solar panels provide your energy needs during the day when the sun is shining. Any excess solar energy produces gets fed back into the power grid. At night, after the solar panels are not producing any energy, your home uses energy from the power grid. The grid acts like a sort of battery bank for you. At the end of the month you get paid by the electric company for any excess energy you did not use.

In a grid assisted solar power system the solar panels provide all your power needs by day. If there are clouds the battery bank buffers out any dips in the power output to your home.

But during times of low sunlight or rain then the grid assisted part comes into play. I have the Aims power converter which runs on 120 volts AC grid power and puts out 12 or 24 volts DC at up to 75 Amps.

The solar panels produce all the power you need when the sun is shining. But during longer cloudy periods the Aims power converter keeps the batteries topped off so they do not get damaged.

This is great for us because I am not at home much anymore during the day due to my job. I always have to power down the house when I am gone so I dont damage the battery bank.

Now though with grid assisted solar power, the power grid acts like a backup or generator in an off grid solar power system and keeps the batteries from being damaged.
