Follow the series How To Get Off The Grid For $5,000 (or less). This is the next video in the series. Today we talk about reducing your energy requirements.

This video will help those who are on the grid and those who are off the grid. For those who pay a monthly electric bill, some of the tips here can save you money. For those who are planning to go off the grid, the tips here can get you prepared. And for those who are already off the grid, this can help cut your energy requirements even further.

The first and easiest thing you can do is switch all your light bulbs to LED lighting which will cut your lighting cost by 16 or less. Next learn to turn off the lights when you leave a room, further saving energy.

I show a remote control power outlet which makes it easy and fun to save energy. You can press a button to turn on and off lights remotely as you come and go from room to room.

You can also get motion sensing LED light bulbs which turn on and off as you enter or leave a room.

To save a lot of energy replace the power hungry appliances in your home with off grid alternatives.

As an introduction to off grid solar living you could get some USB rechargeable devices and start learning how to use them. A USB solar panel will keep those devices charged up for free using the power of the sun.

The new USB chargeable devices such as an LED lamp have built in circuitry to prevent over charge and over discharge of the battery. This protects the battery from damage and mistakes.

These, combined with a portable solar panel, are perfect ways to learn about solar power without the fear of damaging them.

You will learn to save energy by turning devices off when not needed in order to save the battery for next time.

Below are some of the items I mentioned in the video. I advise you get some, if not all, of these to help you cut your energy bill now and prepare you for off grid living later.
